Experts predict that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. The pandemic hasn’t reached many lower income countries and as shelter-in-place orders relax, additional outbreaks may flare.
The Rise Emergency Ventilator was designed by Meter, a company with combined experience in hardware design for scale and in automated resuscitator design. Meter has has validated manufacturability of the design, has conducted extensive lifetime and clinical testing, and is standing by to deliver hundreds of units in a matter of days.
Meter is now seeking operational partners to get this life-saving device into the hands of care workers around the world. Partners will receive a detailed BOM, list of suppliers, manufacturing work instructions, and all factory calibration and testing routines.
Rapid Scaling for a Staggering Need
Experts predict that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over and that the need for ventilators will continue to grow with alarming speed. Traditional ventilators were not designed to be quickly manufactured and require specialized parts, equipment, and processes that cannot be easily scaled. In order to meet rapid and fluctuating demand, the world needs a ventilator that can be affordably produced at high volumes.
 
The Rise Emergency Ventilator was designed for rapid scaling with components available in the current supply chain, and without the need for medically-specialized manufacturing. Any manufacturing facility that can produce consumer electronics can build Rise Emergency Ventilators, making it possible to immediately and affordably produce tens of thousands of units on command.

Precise Monitoring and Alarms
The Rise Emergency Ventilator provides continuous mandatory ventilation (CMV) in volume controlled ventilation (VCV) mode. The device uses a combination of pressure, flow and internal sensors to provide the following alarms:

An electrical or mechancial fault has been detected
Error: Check Bag/Circuit
Target volume delivery failed or continuing pressure detected
Power Loss
The ventilator has lost mains power (alarm is on included UPS)
High Pressure Above Threshold
Measured pressure is above expected value during inspiration
PEEP Below Threshold
Measured pressure is too low during expriation
Tidal Volume Error
Inspired and expired volumes are not the same
Circuit Disconnected
Some part of the respiratory circuit has become disconnected
Patient Breathing Effort
Spontaneous patient breathing has been detected
Web Dashboard and SMS Alerts
A web-based dashboard and easy-to-use automatic networking capability allow users to immediately begin remote monitoring of multiple Rise ventilators at a given site. The system is self-contained and requires no network configuration.

The Rise Emergency Ventilator was developed by Meter in an effort to help meet the global ventilator shortage. Meter is an industrial hardware startup based in Boston, MA and San Francisco, CA.

Meter worked closely with pulmonary critical care clinicians to develop a device grounded in clinical best practices and that address the needs of frontline healthcare workers. The Rise Emergency Ventilator is based on previous research in manual bag resuscitator controls initiated by a member of Meter’s engineering team with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Meter’s team has expertise in hardware design and resuscitator development. Members of the team have manufactured tens of thousands of hardware products at scale. Meter is uniquely positioned to help solve the ventilator shortage problem.
